Our Company Story
I was standing in a customer’s home, looking at the furnishings they had in their lower den area. It was a quiet and shaded place, tastefully laced with museum quality American Indian artifacts. I could feel the time and care they had taken to find these pieces and weave them into their lifestyle. Little did I know this moment would help define our direction and passion.
This customer had a problem.
They had hand-hewn structural beams that we were hired to replace because they had been water damaged, and we needed to fabricate heavy steel brackets to support them. As I stood there picturing in my mind how the fabricated brackets would be built, it occurred to me that I had an opportunity to either do something easy and blah, or I could grab an influence from the lives of my customer and do something absolutely pleasing to them and stunning. The massive hand-hammered arrowhead brackets pictured to the right were born.
I was fortunate to have had a couple major mentors in my younger life, both being themselves very accomplished. One was a scenic designer in New York, where I became a scenic carpenter in a union scene shop building Broadway and movie sets, and the other was Matt Wolf (of the Wolf appliance family) who was a preeminent kitchen and bath designer where I became one of his two prime contractors.
Through these influencers, I learned the importance of creating a space that invoked a strong sensory experience whenever you are in it. Imagine if you would a theatre or movie set depicting the early American west, or Elizabethan England, Colonial Williamsburg Virginia, Spanish Mexico or the white and gray-shingled Cape styles of coastal Maine. These places create completely different moods in us, don’t they?
As I drove neighborhoods, I was struck by how many homes were simply off-the-shelf with bland cookie-cutter designs and materials, and how different it could be, how much more comfortable and rewarding it would be for a homeowner if the entire building experience was created around their influences, personalities and unique needs.
Something was wrong with the home building industry.
Instead of forcing clients to find something designed for someone else and make them conform to it, what if we could design so that everything fit them perfectly and comfortably like a tailored set of clothes?
One size does not fit all.
We decided to develop a system of design that encourages and inspires the customer to discover who they are, and how they want to live in a more fulfilled way, a sense of place that rewards them whenever they are in it or near it.
Where most people will be held hostage to the customary and unfulfilling experience of living in a home built to fit someone else or simply following the latest temporary design trends, our clients can have something that is uniquely fitted to them, that correctly fits the land and embraces the attributes they already have and connect with, instead of working against or ignoring them.
We created a solution.
We paired that inspiring design system with carefully chosen craftsmen and artisans backed by state-of-the-art communications and project management tools, to blend old-world skills with new-world technology so we can be the company that gives our customers the best possible building experience. We deliver peace of mind.
